Individual Cat Housing
 

Cats need adequate space, which must be aminimum size of 11sq.ft (ASV Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters) but ideally larger to allow for separate areas for:

 
  • Sleeping,
  • Eating and
  • Elimination
 

Consider the current recommendations regarding the layout of an individual cat cage as seen below.

 
 

However, we must also provide cats with the ability to hide, as well as the freedom to express normal behaviours such as stretching, rolling, climbing, and active play.

 

For example, using the diagram below, which has been drawn to scale, can you see how challenging it might be to meet our cats’ needs for normal posturing and behavioural expression even if we meet the 2 foot spacing requirement?
