Definition and Causes
 
Stress in the animal centre environment can be caused by many normal components of animal centre life. There are many causes of stress such as:
 
  • Physical stressors:
    • Malnutrition
    • Injury
    • Parasite infestation
    • Infectious disease
    • Pregnancy/Lactation
    • Pain
  • Environmental Stressors:
    • Ambient Temperature
    • Odour
    • Noise
    • Crowded conditions
    • Improper Lighting/Day-Night Cycle
  • Emotional Stressors:
    • Fear
    • Boredom
    • Depressed Attitude
    • Anxiety
Every effort should be made to minimize stress in the animal’s environment.
